PRODUCT CARE FAQs
Proper care and regular upkeep keep your product looking great, working smoothly, and support the longevity of your warranty coverage.
How often should I clean my screen fabric?
We recommend cleaning your screen fabric at least twice a year for residential applications, and more often for high-traffic or commercial areas. Between cleanings, occasionally brushing off dirt and debris helps prevent buildup.
How do I clean my solar screen fabric?
This applies to the screens on both patio enclosures and motorized screens:
- Mix a mild soap or screen cleaning solution with warm water. For the screen fabric on fixed patio enclosures, Windex Pro Outdoor Products can also be used.
- Dip a soft microfiber cloth or sponge into the solution and gently scrub in a circular motion, working from top to bottom. For stubborn stains, gently use a soft-bristled brush.
- Rinse thoroughly with clear water using a garden hose on a gentle spray setting. High water pressure can stretch or damage the screen material.
- Let the screen air dry completely. Make sure motorized screens are fully dry before retracting them.
How do I care for my motorized screen tracks?
Dirt and debris in the vertical side tracks can cause your screen to perform poorly, so keep them clean:
- Wipe the tracks with a soft cloth and gentle detergent.
- Once dry, apply an even coat of dry silicone spray to the tracks and end caps, then raise and lower the screen to lubricate thoroughly.
- Periodically inspect the tracks and motor area and gently remove any debris that could get in the way of smooth operation.
- Never use WD-40, oil, grease, or oil-based sprays on the tracks. They attract dirt and can impair operation.
What should I do if my motorized screen isn't working right?
- Stop operating the screen right away if it doesn't seem to be moving correctly. This prevents further problems.
- Never try to force the screen up or down by hand.
- Don't disassemble any components. Repairs should only be performed by a trained professional technician.
- Call American Patio Enclosures as soon as you notice an issue with the motor, controls, or operation so we can help.
Good to know: motorized screens with obstacle detection help protect the product, prevent fabric damage, and maintain proper tension.
How do I clean aluminum framework and louvered pergolas?
Extruded aluminum framework (found on louvered pergolas, patio enclosures, and more) is easy to care for:
- Mix a mild soap or detergent with water and apply with a soft cloth or sponge, gently scrubbing from top to bottom. For louvers, a soft brush or cloth works well.
- Rinse thoroughly with clear water to remove all soap residue.
- Let it air dry or wipe with a clean, soft cloth to prevent water spots.
How do I clean my glass enclosure?
Use your trusty window-cleaning tools and products. Avoid silicone-based products and choose Teflon-based products when possible. Wash vertically first, then finish the bottom with horizontal strokes, using a squeegee for a polished look. Regularly vacuum the bottom tracks of your glazing system to keep debris from building up.
What routine checks should I do?
- Regularly check for loose screws, connections, or signs of wear and tear, and address minor issues promptly before they escalate.
- If your enclosure has a gutter or drainage system, keep it clear of leaves and debris so water runs off properly.
- Trim nearby foliage so falling branches don't damage the structure or clog drainage.
- If you have clear flexible vinyl panels, roll them down often. Leaving them rolled up for long periods can cause clouding or distortion.
What should I never use or do on my patio products?
These apply to every product we install:
- DO NOT use abrasive household cleaners or materials. They can scratch surfaces or strip protective finishes.
- DO NOT use harsh chemicals, solvents, petroleum, or ammonia-based products on any part of your enclosure. They can damage finishes and screen material, or void your warranty.
- DO NOT use high-pressure washers. They can damage paint, joints, screens, or fabric. A garden hose on a gentle spray is all you need.
- DO NOT use WD-40, oil, grease, or oil-based sprays on motorized screen tracks.
- DO NOT leave clear flexible vinyl rolled up for long periods.
- DO NOT touch screen surfaces with sharp objects or apply excessive pressure while cleaning.
WARRANTY FAQs
Answers to the most common questions about what your American Patio Enclosures warranty covers, what it doesn't, and how to make a claim.
Who provides my warranty, and who is covered?
All warranties are provided directly by American Patio Enclosures, so you never have to chase down a third party. Our warranties apply only to the original owner (original purchaser) of the property and are non-transferable.
What does the Limited Lifetime Warranty cover?
Many of our products, such as our lattice pergolas, come with a Limited Lifetime Warranty. This guarantees your product will not peel, blister, flake, chip, split, rust, or crack for the lifetime of the original property owner.
Is my louvered pergola covered?
Yes. Louvered pergola systems are covered by a Limited Lifetime Warranty that includes defective elements, manufacturing flaws, and mechanical issues. Coverage does not apply to issues caused by intentional misuse or by operating the structure in a way it isn't intended or that we've advised against (see "What can void my warranty?" below).
What warranty comes with solar screen fabric?
Our durable, all-weather solar screen fabrics carry a limited warranty on commercial applications from the original date of purchase. It covers defects in workmanship and materials, and/or excessive loss of strength from normal exposure conditions, rot, and mildew. This warranty is extended only to the original purchaser.
Is my fixed patio enclosure covered?
Our Limited Lifetime Warranty applies to standard installation projects and services provided by our company. Projects that involve building onto or attaching to existing framework or extrusions installed by a previous business or contractor (such as alterations, adjustments, rescreening, or partial material replacement) do not qualify for the lifetime warranty. In most of these cases we still offer a reduced one-year or five-year warranty, decided case by case based on the scope of the project. We cannot warranty pre-existing structures, products, or materials that we altered but did not fully install.
What warranty comes with motorized retractable screens?
Motorized and retractable screens installed from beginning to end by American Patio Enclosures come with a non-transferable Limited Lifetime Warranty. It covers conditions resulting from normal wear and tear, as well as mechanical flaws in components that our technicians find defective after an evaluation.
To keep your coverage, please follow the manufacturer's instructions and the guidance from your installer and sales representative. If a system stops working properly because those directions weren't followed, our technicians will evaluate the issue and our office will let you know about any material or labor charges before work is done.
What can void my warranty?
Knowing what isn't covered helps protect your coverage. Your warranty will be void if the product has been subjected to:
- Intentional misuse or negligence
- Vandalism or intentional damage
- Lack of reasonable maintenance to prevent buildup of dirt, mildew, or pollution, or exposure to chemical products or incompatible cleaners
- Alterations, such as applying paints, coatings, stains, or varnishes
- Impact of foreign objects, hail, lightning, fire, hurricanes, tornadoes, or other Acts of God
- Unreasonable or improper use or care
- Exposure to corrosive chemicals
- Leaving retractable screens fully down during harsh weather or storms, or ignoring the manufacturer's wind rating (see the next question)
Can I leave my retractable screens down during a storm?
No. Per the manufacturer's wind rating, retractable screens should always be fully retracted (up) and never left down and unattended when winds exceed 35 mph. Purposely leaving screens fully down during harsh weather or storm conditions will void your warranty.
How do I make a warranty claim?
Simply contact American Patio Enclosures. We proactively manage and resolve all customer service issues, including complaints and product service issues, and we strive to address every concern in a timely manner. Please include a copy of your original purchase order with all warranty claims.
If our technicians believe there may be an underlying defect that is unrelated to our installation and at no fault of the customer, we'll work with the product manufacturer on an evaluation and a reasonable solution.
